Here at BOX15, we offer a number of standing desks and sit stand desk adapters. A standing desk (also known as a ‘sit stand desk’ or ‘stand-up desk’) is a desk designed for working at while standing up or using with a high stool. They are beneficial for many reasons, however, one question we’ve been asked numerous times is, “Do standing desks help lower back pain?”
Within this blog, we’ll go through benefits associated with sit-stand desks, and whether or not they’re right for you!
It’s true that standing does burn more calories than sitting. However, before you cancel your gym membership, be aware that standing only burns a ‘few’ more calories than sitting. Roughly only around 54 calories over 6 hours in fact. To put that into perspective, that’s around the same as 1 small green apple.
Standing desks are great for keeping you on your toes! As a result, it’s no real surprise to find links to increased concentration and productivity while using them. In 2014, A study from 2014 by Texas A&M University carried out a 6-month study on this. It appeared to show that out of 167 employees, those at standing desks were 45% more productive on a daily basis, than those who were seated.
Unfortunately, a standing desk is a not cure-all solution to back pain. However, various studies have shown that utilizing the sit stand feature throughout the day ‘can’ improve and even prevent back and neck pain.
However, it is worth noting that poor standing posture can also cause back and neck pain. It is important to adjust your standing desk so that your head, neck and spine are aligned. If adjusted properly, you will be able to rest your wrists flat on the desk in front of you. In addition, with your elbows at 90-degrees. As with a regular desk set ups, your computer monitor should be at or below eye level.
It is worth considering whether a standing desk is practical for the work that you do / how you approach it. You may find that you’d be more suited to having a sit stand desk adjuster to allow you the option to switch.
If you’re someone who finds it easier to focus while sat down, a sit stand desk may not be beneficial for you. However, if you feel more comfortable being on your feet while closing sales over the phone, a sit stand desk might be perfect for you!
