The Box15 Guide to choosing castors for your office furniture

What are castors?

Castors are wheels that are usually attached to tables, chairs or the legs of other items of furniture. Different types of furniture have differently shaped hollow frame legs. Castors can come in rectangular, circular or square shapes to fit all manner of different furniture legs, but more often, castors come on a threaded insert that sits within a casing inside the leg.

Most castors are easy to either push into the hollow frame of the furniture leg or to screw into place using the threaded bolt provided.

However, before you rush out to buy replacement castors, it’s worth remembering that castors are not all created equal.

The type of castors you choose will largely depend on what you want to use castors for and how you want to use them. Things like the type of castor, the size and load of the furniture they are used on, and even the floor surface that they need to navigate will be key elements when choosing which castors to use.

Why use castors?

Fitting the right set of castors to your hollow frame furniture will mean you can easily roll furniture from one place to another, when required, without putting unnecessary strain on your back, or that of your employees.

2 things to consider when choosing castors

Castors aren’t expensive. A pack of 4 starts at around £8 each, but with Box 15, the more you buy, the more you save. Having said that, before you invest in new castors it does make sense to choose the ones you need carefully. When choosing which castors consider how flat the floor is that they will be used on.

1 – Is the floor hard? If so, we recommend you use the more forgiving Soft Wheel Rubber Castors such as these that are supplied products such as our Height Adjustable Flip Top Table. These softer wheels are more robust and have the added benefit of a stronger brake.

2 -Do you need to be able to lock your castors in position? If so, make sure you choose castors that can be locked. Failure to do so could be really dangerous if the furniture in question is used for sitting or leaning on.

Both our Replacement heavy duty ‘Max’ castors and our standard nylon castors all come with brakes that can be applied to prevent furniture creep.

It doesn’t take long to ensure you make the right choice for your furniture, however, if you’re after more information about the types of castors for your furniture, we have friendly advisors available online or you can call us on 01295 565001.
